We’re ecstatic to announce that the Baltimore Citywide Youth Poetry Team (BCYPT) has agreed to make a presentation at our July chapter meeting, along with their coach and mentor, Slangston Hughes on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 7:00PM at Ukazoo Books in Towson, MD.
BCYPT is where passionate young people and poetry connect to express themselves, bond and change the world. The Team, which is a collaboration between many organizations, clubs and independent artists, is led by Poetry for the People – Baltimore. They have competed in a number of regional slams, as well as in Brave New Voices’ International Youth Poetry Slam the past two years in a row.
Their coach, Slangston Hughes, was born into and influenced by the Hip Hop era, while simultaneously acknowledging the foundations laid down by forerunners and trailblazers such as Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Gil Scott Heron, The Last Poets, Sonia Sanchez, etc. In 2010 Mr. Hughes released a book of original poetry entitled “Slanguage Arts” (The Readers Edition), the follow up to 2007’s album of the same title which was critically praised as “A deeply profound representation of this generations next and most important radical poetic voice” by Umar Bin Hussin of The Last Poets. Hughes released a second collection of poems entitled “Griot Glimpses” in 2011. Hughes’ latest album, Ghetto Griot: Vol 1 (Tubman City Times) was released in April 2012.
